What is the link between the UNICEF and traditional martial arts?

They both have similar goals:

The goal of traditional martial arts is to end violence as swiftly and efficiently as possible

The goal of UNICEF is to stop violence against children as swiftly and efficiently as possible

3 million children suffer from violence on a daily basis in France

245 million children in the world live in war zones and suffer from violence on a daily basis

The “Martial Arts United for UNICEF” event focuses on a dynamic approach aiming at raising awareness, informing and making direct contributions in order to meet the 6 main goals of the UNICEF:

1. To guaranty a safe and inclusive world for each child

To help children and adults facing situations and / or contexts of violence in the educational, family and / or social settings to become aware of alternative ways of countering violence without participating in it, by presenting concrete, practical methods that have been field-tested on the long run.

2. To ensure children’s survival whilst giving them a good education, especially during wartime

To provide children with tools and strategies allowing them to discover their potential and their own identity, so that they can free themselves from the vicious circle of violence. In doing so, they will in turn serve as positive examples and help other children realize their potential and become individuals who can free themselves from all forms of violence.

3. To help provide practical solutions on the frontline

To assist the UNICEF by providing a financial contribution in the form of a donation collected through the benefits of the event, but most importantly to provide an opportunity for free and far-reaching publicity on French and foreign media to reach new networks of potential donors and collect more donations.

4. To produce research and analysis that will allow for the implementation of initiatives tailored to specific survival related issues

To present field tested knowledge and experiences that are normally difficult to access. The study and analysis of such carefully guarded information related to solving interpersonal violence will help children and adults in their familial and social environment. These adults must indeed be taken into account because they serve as role models for children in the acquisition of violence management tools.

5. To uphold the rights of children all over the world

A systemic approach shows that when it comes to children protection, we face a situation of “children see, children do”. As such, we must consider all the negative impacts that the adults have on children. We must therefore raise awareness and educate adults about this problem. We need to show them in concrete and practical terms that there are alternatives ways to counter all forms of physical and social violence they suffer from. Transforming these adults into positive examples will modify the social and / or familial environment of the children and contribute to their positive education on an ongoing basis, thus breaking the vicious circle of violence.

6. To be active internationally, NATIONALLY and locally

To raise awareness among French and foreign audiences that learning a traditional martial art means learning how to get out of the vicious circle of violence at the interpersonal level. It is this newfound freedom that allows children and adults who have been victims of violence to create their own identity, and to do so in complete security, so as to discover and build themselves into proper individuals.
